About

David W J Lloyd is a Welsh artist whose figurative work inhabits the liminal space between folklore and modernity, drawing deeply from his homeland's rich mythological heritage.

Born in Cardiff in 1972, he gained his formal education at Falmouth School of Art & Design after completing his foundation studies at Howard Gardens Faculty of Art & Design, where he developed his distinctive approach to narrative-driven artwork.

Following a period of artistic experimentation and a successful career in media production—during which he produced two feature films (Devil's Bridge and The Lighthouse) and co-founded the BAFTA-winning post-production company Dogs of Annwn—David returned to his artistic practice with a renewed vision.

His current work masterfully blends traditional and digital techniques, incorporating vintage vernacular photography to create haunting glimpses into Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh mythology. This collection of antique images, including vintage postcards, CDV portraits, and family snapshots, forms the foundation of his digital pieces, each transformed through the filter of his imagination and catalogue of half-remembered stories.

David's artistic vocabulary is distinguished by its dark humor and ethereal atmosphere, crafting mysterious narratives that bridge ancient folklore with contemporary sensibilities. His pieces often reclaim and recontextualize religious iconography, celebrating the endurance of ancient traditions beneath the veneer of modern belief systems.

This distinctive approach has earned him placement in exhibitions at prestigious venues including Aberystwyth Arts Centre, the gallery@Oxo on London's South Bank, and selection for notable shows such as The National Eisteddfod's Y Lle Celf (2019 & 2025), The Royal Cambrian Academy's Winter Open (2022), and The Wales Contemporary (2022).

Currently based in the Vale of Glamorgan, David actively engages with his audience through live art sessions on Twitch and TikTok, where he demonstrates his creative process and discusses his work, whilst offering advice and tips to other fledgling artists.

His art continues to evolve as a celebration of collective memory and imagination, weaving together threads of Welsh mythology, personal history, and shared cultural experience into compelling visual narratives that speak to both past and present.
