About This Piece
Have you heard of the devil in the Welsh lady's shawl? This well-known question among fans of Welsh art refers to the famous painting Salem by Sydney Curnow Vosper. The artist initially did not spot it until it was pointed out, finding the connection a bit spurious. Expecting something more obvious, David decided to embrace the challenge with a wicked glint in their eye.
Determined to recreate a version of the original painting using his collection of Welsh lady photos, David found the chapel more challenging. He visited Pen-rhiw Chapel at St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life, capturing numerous interior photos to aid in recreating a facsimile of the painting.
This piece was exhibited at Aberystwyth Art Centre in 2022, just over the road from the National Library of Wales, where a version of the original painting is displayed.
This is a mixed media piece consisting of giclée print on heavyweight matte 308gsm Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper, which has then been painted over with watercolours and pencils. Supplied framed and ready to hang.
Size And Frame
The original piece is approximately 29.7cm x 29.7cm (11.7 inches x 11.7 inches). It is supplied ready to hang, mounted in a black edged frame.
