About This Piece
Einion ap Collwyn, brother of a Welsh prince, is remembered in legend for his treachery, which led to the death of Iestyn ap Cwrgan, Prince of Glamorgan, at the hands of Norman invaders.
As punishment for his betrayal of Wales, Einion was cursed to spend eternity as a fox. This we know from the tale of a drover in the Vale of Glamorgan, who encountered the doomed fox on his way to market—and heard it speak.
While it’s unclear who delivered this transformative punishment, the story inspired this piece: a forlorn Einion, wandering the land, burdened by the guilt and sorrow of his betrayal.
Made with Watercolour and pencils on watercolour paper.
