About This Piece
On cold New Year’s nights in the valleys and villages of South Wales, the Mari Lwyd roams from house to house, engaging in rhyme battles with the occupants—a tradition that has recently gained momentum and become more widespread.
This marks the first appearance of the Mari Lwyd in the artist’s work, now depicted with corpse candles and flaming eyes for a unique twist. Corpse candles, rooted in folklore, were seen as omens of death, illuminating the route of a doomed person’s funeral procession days before their passing.
An original watercolour and ink painting on handmade Khadi paper, enhanced with gold leaf, float mounted in a black kick-stand frame to show off the raw deckle edge of the paper.
Size And Frame
David offers the piece framed. The original piece is approximately A5 sized - 21cm x 14.8cm (8.3 inches x 5.8 inches). The piece is float-mounted on grey card in a black rimmed frame for ease of display with a hanging bar on the rear, or can be freestanding with a kick stand.
