About This Piece

By the side of a road in old Carmarthen town stood Merlin’s Oak—or rather, it lingered in a slow, managed decline. Legend held that the ancient oak carried a curse: if it fell, so too would Carmarthen, under the spell of its famed wizard, Merlin.

In the 1970s, the tree was removed, reduced to little more than a withered stump after becoming unstable. Not long after, severe flooding struck the area, but Carmarthen endured—perhaps because the ghost of Merlin was content that the town had honoured the tree for so many years. Today, a new oak grows where the old one once stood, keeping the legend alive.
