About This Piece

David playfully reinterprets the famous "devil in the Welsh lady's shawl" mystery from Sydney Curnow Vosper's painting Salem. Rather than settle for the subtle, almost imperceptible devil in the original artwork, he deliberately crafted a more overt version.

Utilising photographs from Pen-rhiw Chapel at St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life, a Welsh lady from his collection, and a Cardiff Castle dragon statue, he digitally composed a reimagined scene. By manually adding watercolour effects to mimic a Victorian-era carte de visite (CDV), he created a literal, tongue-in-cheek representation of the legendary hidden devil.

The original piece that this print is taken from was shown at the Aberystwyth Art Centre, just over the road from the National Library Of Wales, where a version of the original piece hangs, a fact that always raises a smile for David.
