About This Piece
Also known as the Tailless Black Sow, Yr Hwch Ddu Gwta is a demonic figure from Welsh folklore, used as a bogeyman to scare children home. On Nos Calan Gaeaf, the Welsh Halloween, both children and adults would race to reach home safely, fearing the giant sow that followed the bonfire divinations.
According to legend, the last person home would have their soul devoured by this fearsome entity, a creature that struck terror into those familiar with the tales. The monstrous black sow was often accompanied by the White Lady, a ghostly figure who was sometimes headless—depending on the version of the story and the region it came from.
Made with inks, watercolour, gel inks, and pencils on Bristol Board.
